Me and my mate climbed the col du mollard in July 2006 a few days before the TDF came through. From the St Jean De Maurianne side its a fairly steady climb for the first few kms, weaving up the valley. It then hairpins through the trees for a few kms and it can seem to take an age before you reach the tree line. Its not too bad but there are some steepish sections to keep the interest. I rode on a 39x25 and was slightly overgeared (im 71kg) but it was ok. There is a well at the top at the start of the town to fill up the bottles. A coffee is also a must! An attractive climb through a forest opening onto alpine fields with good views. Would recommend if youre in the area.
