Story by JB from , France, submitted on 07/07/2009
Did this as part of the Marmotte 2009. Deceptively long and pretty hard in parts. The most difficult ramps start just after a steep downhill and its very easy to get stuck if you dont shift gears down aggressively as you hit 10-11% . The top of the climb is beautiful, you pass a manmade lake and the road continues at a gentle but stable gradient till you reach a cross-roads, Croix de Fer on the right, Glandon on the left. One thing to note: the descent into St Etienne is extremely technical, first few switchbacks are very tricky, then it opens up a bit more after a few km.
