Good challenging climb.

Coming from Taninges the road traffic is heavy until you reach the turn to Les Gets. The overall gradient is deceptive as the first 6k are not all that steep. After that there is a short downhill until you start climbing 6k at 9-10%. This is tough and unrelenting through the forest. With 4k to go the road levels out through pres des lys and you can catch your breath looking at pretty village. Then you have the final 2k to the top of the col.

Story by Tim Wallis from London, United Kingdom, submitted on 11/04/2009
I tackled this last week during half term week. At the bottom of the climb was a route barre sign which I ignored. It wasnt until I got near the top that I realised it wasnt going to be possible just to carry my bike passed a couple of barriers. The road is blocked for the construction of a tunnel through part of the mountain. Luck would have it though that one of the construction works took pity on me and allowed me to walk through the construction site and continue on my way to the top. With H&S in the UK, this would never have happened. Who says the French arent helpful to the English :-) It was a great climb in fantastic weather. The aire temp was less than 10, but bright sunshine made it feel warmer, but not too warm as I continued on from the top down into Morzine and then bagged the Col de Joux Plane on the way back to Samoens.
