The col de Forclaz route from Martigny is a long hard slog with little or no shade. Avoid the midday sun where possible, combined with the heavy traffic and ensuing fumes, it makes for an uncomfortable journey.

We climbed this as part of the Tour de Mont Blanc. (Col des Saisies, Cormet de Roselend, Petit St. Bernard, Gr. St. Bernard, Forclaz, Col des Montets) and was definitely NOT the highlight of the trip. Too much traffic and not enough room on the road. There are alternate routes up through the villages on the slopes (10%+) but worth the pain. From the round about at the bottom, 13 km.
