I climbed the Col de Vars from S to N in July 2007. Its a very gentle climb until the village of St Paul sur Ubaye where I spent the night (Auberge du Chamois Blanc - modest but highly recommended) Setting off the next morning (in persistent rain)the road winds up to another village before settling into a series of long and quite steep switchbacks (nice views back down the valley) before reaching the col which is not particular interesting.
