This is a deceptively hard climb based on the profile, but maybe it was the stiff headwind all the way up the valley. Once you get past Gavarnie and on to the col, the road stays steep all the way to the top. Typical for the Pyrenees, there are plenty of cows, sheep, etc on the road at various times. The decent can be a bit unnerving due to animals, poor road surface, and sheer drop offs. Take everything you need with you - there are no facilities after Gavarnie.
