I did not ride the entire climb as I was staying 5km from the top but I post a warning for roadies. If you use the Col in the hope of reaching Limogne in Italy, you have to take the old road described by Rhys. The main (tarmac) road passes through a 3km tunnel; to narrow for vehicles to pass. Lights control traffic one way at a time, which is why they don''t allow cycling. Mind you the valley is stunning and worth the cycle up for the ride down, and the MTB options are endless. Tende is worth exploring (and has food, cafes, and an outdoor pool, where you can stay all day for 1 Euro. I stayed in Vievola, where friends of mine rent an apartment. Contact me if you are interested.

This is not the real Col de Tende!! It only takes you to the start of the real col that follows the old road to the col at over 1800m. It has 48 hairpins and a section of maybe 30% gradient. It is tarmac for 2/3 but is unsurfaced at the top and would be tricky on a pure road bike.
