A very nice but though climb. Sondernach is in fact the real start of the climb. From there on it is all + 10%. About halfway there is a less steep part which allows for recuperation. This climb is worth the effort when youre in the Vosges.

When i started it, i thought i was climbing up to the Petit Ballon - which it turned out not to be. It is not too long, but a beautiful and pretty tough climb. The real climb starts after Sondernach, when the road turns to the right. From there it gets pretty steep, with bits up to 12%. I got chased by the same nasty flies the Ventoux is also famous for - at least they make you go fast! From the top of the Platzerwasel it is a great (and easy) climb to the Grand Ballon (via the Markstein). Do it!

I had never heard of this col before, but it is a very nice and steep mountain. The distance is not that long, but the difficulty is more or less the same as the most cols in the Alps!
