Story by Jackie Fraser from Edinburgh, United Kingdom, submitted on 04/10/2013
This is the better side of the Col than the French side, as it is slightly steeper. I did down then up this weekend. On the down, the road surface was even worse than during the summer. The verges are non existent for a few km, and close to La Thuile, there are large roadworks (still). After La Thuile, the road surface improves and the paravalanches and tunnels down to Morgex are well lit, and not terrifying, like those on the route up to the Col de l''Iseran from Bourg St Maurice. From Morgex, its a nice day out to go up the Colle San Carlo, descend back to La Thuile, then climb back to the top of the Col du Pt St Bernard.

The Col du petit St. Bernard is a fun climb that is long, but not steep. The views are gorgeous, and the history is really interesting. This was the major pass that connected Lyons and Rome a thousand years or more years ago. Theres still a working hospice at the top -- when we passed by, the door was open. This isnt challenging, especially compared to the Madeleine close by; but it makes for a very pleasant day.
