This is on a ride close to my holidaying spot which makes a nice 50km circuit. The bottom of the route takes some finding as it is just behind Irun, with no sign posts but it is near the access to the San Marco (church) road and then follow the river up the valley. From the start it is punishing with a quick hairpin followed by a relentless climb for the next 4km. It can be very hot although there is some shade. On the upper part of the steepest climb there is a cattle grid, this signals 1 km before you get some relief. From the plateau, where you get great views of the Trois Couronnes/Penas de Haya, it is an easy climb to the top, and then a fast decent into Oizartzun for either a return to Irun through the valley or over Jaiezkibel if you need another 500m of climb! I do this on my holiday bike with a 34 23, most times I can make it without a rest, but sometimes my respolve fails me somewhere just after the cattle grid - my best advice is to watch the odometer and count down the 10''s of metres from there - the sound of cow/horse bells tells you that the easy section is approaching.
