Canigou-chalet des Cortalets - Prades

The Canigou is a massif in the French Pyrenees, near Perpignan, with a top alt. 2733. At alt. 2050 you find Chalet des Cortalets. To this Chalet is a path that is used by tourist and the mountaineers from the CAF. I cycled this path in august 2008 starting in Prades at alt. 345. From Prades the road goes to Villerach. This is about 5 km. After Villerach the path starts and the asphalt stops. From here it is mainly rocks, but not to bad to cycle. According to the Michelin-map its 20 km to the Chalet. Up to Mouline, a refuge at alt. 1100, it is not difficult. Then it becomes harder. The last 300 meters up are more or less difficult or maybe I was to tired. The quality of the path became more worse and went steeper up. The views are very nice. It is very quit, just a few cars passed, mainly suv. At the chalet you can get drinks or have a meal. Going down, the shocks aren’t a luxury.

Hi, Canigou is 2786m and if you look for it in the Midi Pyrenees you wont find it! Its in the Pyrenees Orientales , or French Catalonia. For less of a hard climb there are several spots where you can leave a car at around 1660m, the dissused mines way above Arles sur Tech is a good one. The climb is save, with nice views but heavy. After the first couple of hundreds meters it is unpaved but still to do. The last hundreds of meters are more difficult. You need an ATB to climb it. During the climb there is not possibility to get any supplies, at the end, above the parking place there is a mountain cabin.
