Climbed for the first time in the Tour de France in 1978. From the west side, the Col de Marie Blanque is only 8 km long: as a result, it's steep! The last 4 km are steeper than 10%, often close to 12%.

The last 5 lm are very steep with absolutely no rest. I climbed it with 34*25 and had to zigzag my way up cause it was too hard! Nice view at the top.

Ride startes at Asson so about 45km before reaching Escot ... plenty of time to warm up. Date 17/11/2009 yes! mid November ..... and the temperature at the Col was 20 degrees C OK the last four kms were hard but it was always going to be that way. There were no nasty surprises. One of the km posts indicated 13% and there were short sections at 15% Advice - try to go slow DO NOT try to go quickly, stay calm and concentrate on your breathing. This is the first col on next years Etape du Tour so watch out for a lot of early casualties. If you are not used to plus 10% it will be hellish.
