Description

If youre looking for a 1000m+ climb to gauge your climbing abilities, Klausens a good choice. Klausen was my first 1000m+ climb and I did in on a mountain bike which wasnt in great condition. The climb is gradual enough that I could switch to one of the lowest gears and pedal without too much exertion. Theres a long flat bit in the middle of the climb which gives one a small respite before the climb starts again for the summit. There are lots of farms on this flat bit and you can find yourself weaving through a crowd of cows if you ride through here when the cows are led out to pasture. Can be quite a funny sight. The pass is quite close to Zurich and so can get busy with bikers and cars though its easily mamageable. All in all a fantastic ride with wonderful views. Well worth a go.

i climbed it today from Linthal. Sign at the bottom says it climbs 1281 metres in 21.7Km, which equates to 4,202 feet. My Garmin showed 3,833 at the top. I thought the climb was quite tough in that I climbed 1900 feet in 5 and a bit miles without a break, then had the rest in the middle bit, and then the last bit was hard but interestingly it didn''t seem as hard as the first section. I''d rather not have the easy middle bit and have a more gradual gradient. It was however a lovely sunny day and this is a very scenic climb.

I went on a little tour of Switzerland and my first day was from Zurich to Altdorf. I found the Klausenpass to be much tougher than on the profile. (especially the first part...) Probably it was the poor shape I was in ...
